Firefighter accused of embezzlement

HANOVER, VA (WWBT)- A Hanover firefighter is in some hot water.  He's facing charges for stealing money from his own volunteer fire house. Rodney Gentry, the treasurer of the Henry Volunteer Fire Department, was arrested Tuesday on felony embezzlement charges after a week long investigation.

The mood inside his volunteer fire house is one of devastation upon hearing one of their own is accused of violating not only their trust, but the public's.

It is a measure of goodwill.  You donate your hard earned dollars to the men and women who put their lives on the line fighting fires for free. Henry Volunteer Fire Department #6 holds fundraisers to buy things the county can't supply.

The money is a gift to "the volunteers serving you." But according to the sheriff's office, while Rodney Gentry was serving as the fire house treasurer for about four years, he decided to help himself to some of that money.

Permits now needed for car wash fundraisers

ASHLAND, VA (WWBT)- Schools and churches need them to supplement funding - we're talking about car wash fundraisers.

Unfortunately, holding a car wash just got a lot more complicated in Ashland and Hanover.

Ingrid Stenbjorn's job has become more challenging lately. She's the town engineer in Ashland and part of her job includes enforcing environmental regulations.

"One of the things that is no longer allowed is run-off from car washes," Stenbjorn said.

The concern here is water from car washes runs into the sewer and right into our creeks and waterways.

She recently found out about a car wash scheduled for the Rite Aid parking lot off Route 1 and Route 54. At the last minute, she had to deliver the bad news - no car washes allowed here.

Secretariat's birthplace up for auction

HANOVER, VA (WWBT)- We are right in the middle of the height of horse racing season, with the Preakness set for this weekend. Only two horses have won the Triple Crown since Secretariat did it 39 years ago. But the birthplace of the best race horse in history, right up the road in Caroline County, faces an uncertain future.

The Meadow, the iconic farm that's the birthplace of Secretariat is in foreclosure, as part of the land formerly owned by the State Fair of Virginia. It's up for auction next Tuesday...with horse racing fans fearing the worst.

On the site in Doswell is the foaling shed where Secretariat was born, and other structures that housed the thoroughbred for the first 22 months of his life. Starting in 2003, the buildings were given a facelift, and ever since, they've been a horse racing lovers destination with thousands of people coming from all over the country to see them.

Two injured in Hanover crash

HANOVER, VA (WWBT)- The driver of a log truck and a car that collided near Montpelier Thursday are both being treated for their injuries.

A car traveling west on Route 33, also known as Mountain Road, crossed over into oncoming traffic after 9:00 a.m., according to authorities. A tractor-trailer traveling eastbound drove off the road to avoid the car and flipped, spilling its load all over the road.

The driver of the car was taken by helicopter to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries, while the truck driver was sent to VCU by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

Route 33 was closed for several hours for clean-up and investigation.

Gunman pleads guilty in Hanover teen's death

HANOVER, VA (WWBT)- It was a rap video gone horribly wrong, and now one young Hanover County man is dead while another faces prison time.

Jyreffe Clark was shot and killed back on December 17th. Wednesday, Clark's high school classmate brought the case to an abrupt end by pleading guilty.

Franklin Robertson, III, appeared overwhelmed by sadness and remorse as he gave up the right to a trial, and instead pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Jyreffe Clark had friends everywhere: At church, at Lee-Davis High School, and at home, where people loved him.

A candlelight vigil in December took place just two days after Clark was killed. Clark was among friends, then too. He and three others were recording a rap video inside a house. It was meant to be like the film "Get Rich or Die Tryin".
